What causes burning pain in joints?

For the past year or so I have been awaken put of sleep by excruciating burning pains int knees. All of a sudden last night I was woken up by the same burning pain in my elbow. I have been to the doctors for it but because I currently don't have health insurance I haven't been able to have any testing done. Curious if anyone has any ideas what might be causing this pain??
